Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative
The Great Lakes Stewardship
Initiative (GLSI) was established by the Great Lakes Fishery
Trust, with the support of the Wege Foundation and with the
advice and counsel of an Advisory
Group and a Funders’ Collaborative. The goal of
the GLSI is to increase awareness and understanding of the
ecology of the Great Lakes so that Michigan residents become
active stewards of the Great Lakes and advocates for strategies
that support the long-term sustainability of the Great Lakes
fisheries. The GLSI will support—through grants for
planning and implementation—the linked strategies of
place-based education, professional development for K–12
teachers, and school-community partnerships in order to develop
environmental stewards. The next funding opportunity will
be late in 2008.
For more information
on the GLSI, please read Overview
of the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative, which
covers the background, purpose, and vision for the Initiative,
and Two Tools for Preparing Planning Grant Proposals:
Decision Pathway and Example
Projects, which provides guidance about and examples
of the types of projects the GLFT intends to support through
the Initiative. For inspiration and to better understand the
stewardship goal of the GLSI, read this essay
written by author Jerry Dennis.
