Etiquette
and Safety
Sometimes youll have structures all to yourself;
other times you must share space with a crowd. Your
neighbor may be a retired millionaire fishing for fun
or a laid-off factory worker fishing for supper. Shore
anglers tend to be gregarious, and you can make new
friends and learn a great deal by being helpful and
courteous. Be sure to give others as much space as they
need (if in doubt, ask).
Watching where you cast and keeping a tight line and
an eye on it will help avoid tangles. Still, foul-ups
are inevitable when many people are fishing, and a panicked
salmon or trout knows no boundaries when it is trying
to throw the hook. If someone next to you hooks a fish,
quickly reel in your line so he will have room to play
the quarry. Offer to help with netting chores when the
moment of truth arrives.
Stay off the breakwaters and fishing piers during rough
seas. It is not a safe time to go fishing when waves
are licking over the structure or it is coated with
ice. Always fish with a partner, and use common sense
at all times.
