NEW BUFFALO
Galien River Fishing Platform
Description
New Buffalo City Park affords almost 600 feet of frontage along the Galien River. Anglers fish year-round from two platforms and several benches on the north shore.
Access
Anglers walk about 200 feet from the parking lot. They can also park at the boat launch parking lot and walk an equal distance through the picnic area. Note: The 450-foot-long South Breakwater is on private property and not accessible. The first 300 feet of the 1,000-foot-long North Breakwater is constructed of rubble mound and is extremely hazardous. Therefore, it, too, is not accessible.
Amenities
The paved, lighted parking lot has a capacity of 150 vehicles and is open for a nominal fee from 5:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. The park has a seasonal food concession and restrooms that are not barrier-free.
What's Hot?
- Brown Trout
- Chinook Salmon
- Coho Salmon
- Steelhead
- Walleye
- Yellow Perch
From early March through late May, anglers catch steelhead, brown trout and coho salmon along with an occasional chinook salmon. They report limited success for yellow perch in summer and take some walleye in fall. Salmon return in September, followed by browns in October and steelhead in November.
Tactics
For trout and salmon, (1) Cast pearl, orange-and-silver, and blue-and-silver Krocodiles and other spoons; (2) bobber fish near the river bottom with fresh spawn, wigglers, frozen alewives, and night crawlers. Use minnows for perch. Toss Hopkins spoons or jigs tipped with night crawlers for walleye. For bait, tackle, and fishing information, contact New Buffalo Mini-Mart, corner of Buffalo and Baker (616-469-2725) or Captain Cooks Sports on Whittaker St. (616-469-1720). The Harbor Country Chamber of Commerce is at 530 S. Whittaker (616-469-5409).
Stocking
The DNR annually releases an average of 15,000 brown trout; 12,000 steelhead; and 25,000 coho to the river. These are yearling fish. Managers also stock various numbers of walleye fingerlings.
