LELAND
South Breakwater
Description
The 500-foot-long structure is made from matched stone. Because the surface is neither smooth nor continuous, able-bodied anglers must exercise caution. There is no public access to the 1,100-foot-long north breakwater.
Access
Leland Township owns a small parcel of undeveloped land (80 x 144 feet) that features a small sand dune and abuts to the structure. There is no walkway.
Amenities
There is limited parking on Avenue A. Anglers can also park at the public library across M-22 from Avenue A and walk 1 block to the breakwater. More parking is available in metered spaces at the municipal marina, which has barrier-free restrooms and a boat launch.
What's Hot?
- Brown Trout
- Chinook Salmon
- Steelhead
- Yellow Perch
Anglers catch occasional steelhead and some brown trout from ice out to Memorial Day and in October and November. They take a few chinook salmon in spring and fall and yellow perch in summer.
Tactics
For trout and salmon, pin a small bag of fresh steelhead or sucker spawn to a single egg hook and fish it off bottom below a slip sinker. Also, cast 3¼8-oz. to 3¼4-oz. spoons in silver with or without chartreuse, lime-green, or orange colors. Use minnows for perch. For bait, tackle, and fishing information, contact The Fish Hook in Leland (231-256-9501). The Leelanau Peninsula Chamber of Commerce is at 105 E. Philip in Lake Leelanau (231-256-9895).

Area Accommodations
