NORTHPORT

North Breakwater

Description
The 200-foot-long structure extends about 200 feet into Northport Bay from a 300-foot-long peninsula. The breakwater contains rubble mound and has a cement surface with pipe rails. Anglers can also fish between boats moored to a seawall that runs along the entire shoreline and connects to the breakwater via a cement walkway.

Access
Haserot Park encloses the public marina and contains 1/2 mile frontage on Northport Bay.

Amenities
A 2-acre portion of the park contains parking for 30 vehicles, including two barrier-free spaces. There are no rest rooms. Chemical toilets, which are not barrier-free, are located in the marina.

South Breakwater

Description
The rubble-mound structure, which has a cement walkway and pipe rails, extends 200 feet north into the bay from an L-shaped boat mooring pier. The north portion of the pier is 500 feet long. The first leg, which extends easterly from shore, is 450 feet long. Because these two portions feature a 3-foot-high wall and because the water is shallow, most anglers walk to the end of the breakwater.

Access
Same as above.

Amenities
This portion of the park has parking for 100 vehicles, including four barrier-free spaces, along with two boat launches and chemical toilets. Cement walkways are barrier-free; however, there are no benches or seating areas.

What's Hot?
  • Brown Trout
  • Smallmouth Bass
  • Steelhead
  • Walleye
Anglers catch steelhead in spring, walleye and smallmouth bass in summer, and brown trout in fall.

Tactics
For steelhead and browns, spot spawn sacs off bottom or fancast Little Cleos and other spoons in silver with or without green, orange, chartreuse, or blue colors. For walleye and smallmouth, pin night crawlers to jigs or harnesses and work them slowly along bottom. Grub-bodied tube jigs (without bait) also rate. For bait, tackle, and updated fishing information, contact Jon’s Barber & Sport Shop, 115 Madison in Suttons Bay (231-271-3424). The Leelanau Peninsula Chamber of Commerce is at 105 E. Philip in Lake Leelanau (231-256-9895).

Additional Information

Area Accommodations
Camping is available at nearby Leelanau State Park (231-922-5270).
