SUTTONS BAY
Description
Description: The Village is constructing a barrier-free fishing pier at the east end of the old coal dock on the south end of the small boat harbor. The structure, which will be 84 feet long and 12 feet wide, will extend about 60 feet from shore and allow anglers access to deep water. Funding support is being provided by the Great Lakes Fishery Trust.
Access
The fishing pier will be in a small public park accessed by an unmarked gravel road (Dame Street). A small parking lot is about 120 feet from the site.
Amenities
The gravel lot has parking for six vehicles. Another lot is located on the access road halfway to the park, about 225 feet from the pier. This lot can accommodate 30 vehicles, and a chemical toilet serves patrons. A public boat launch and barrier-free restroom are located in the municipal marina on the other side of the small boat harbor. Note: Fishing is not permitted from the municipal marina dock.
Description
What's Hot?
- Brown Trout
- Menominee
- Smallmouth Bass
- Steelhead
- Whitefish
Because deep water and structure are relatively close to shore, anglers from early April to Memorial Day catch a few brown trout and steelhead from former releases. Summer anglers take smallmouth bass. October serves up menominee, plus the occasional trout and whitefish.
Tactics
Heavy spoons such as Locos, Krocodiles, and Little Cleos and deep-diving plugs such as Countdown Rapalas, Shad Raps, and Wiggle Warts are rated for trout. Try combinations of silver with orange, blue, green, or chartreuse colors. Smallmouth will hit the diving crankbaits in crayfish patterns, along with single-blade spinnerbaits (blue and white, chartreuse and blue, or black), power grubs and tube jigs (crayfish or motor oil colors) and a live leech, minnow, or crawler pinned to a jig. For menominee, fish wigglers on a bare hook and a small split shot off bottom. For bait, tackle, and updated fishing information, contact Johns Barber Shop, 115 Madison in Suttons Bay (231-271-3424). The phone number for the local chamber of commerce agent is 231-271-4404.
