What's Hot?
- Brown Trout
- Channel Catfish
- Chinook Salmon
- Coho Salmon
- Smallmouth Bass
- Steelhead
- Yellow Perch
Anglers catch brown trout and steelhead in spring; a few smallmouth bass, channel catfish and yellow perch in summer; and chinook and coho salmon in late summer and fall. Following the salmon, steelhead return to the nearby inflowing Boardman River to provide occasional action until December.
Tactics
Cast smelt-imitating Countdown Rapalas in blue and silver or black and silver for trout in spring. Catfish hit a night crawler or leaf worm gob fished along the sand bottom near weed edges. Most perch and bass are taken incidentally with these methods. Cast brightly colored heavy spoons or large crankbaits for salmon. Fish fresh spawn for steelhead. For bait, tackle, and updated fishing information, contact Bayshore Outfitters, 13680 SW Bayshore Dr. (231-941-5420), a couple miles west of the marina. The Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce is at 202 E. Grandview Pkwy. (231-947-5075).
Stocking
The DNR annually releases to the Boardman River an average of 250,000 chinook fingerlings; 100,000 coho yearlings; and 16,000 steelhead yearlings. Managers also stock nearby Brewery Creek at Greilickville with 25,000 brown trout yearlings.
