MACKINAW CITY
State Pier
Description
Of the seven structures that extend into the Straits of Mackinac, only the State Pier is available for fishing. At 1,200 feet long, it is also the largest and is lighted and barrier-free. At its end on the south side is a 500-foot-long fishing pier with railings and benches. However, the pier surface is 15 to 20 feet above the water line.
Access
Anglers walk several hundred feet easterly from the south-side parking lot.
Amenities
The lot has parking for 750 vehicles. Barrier-free toilets are located in the center pier, also requiring a walk of several hundred feet.
What's Hot?
- Chinook Salmon
- Coho Salmon
- Menominee
- Smallmouth Bass
- Steelhead
- Yellow Perch
Anglers catch limited numbers of yellow perch, salmon, and menominee in spring, summer, and fall. They also take an incidental steelhead or smallmouth bass.
Tactics
For perch, hook wigglers off a 3-way swivel on a 30-inch lead of light line (2-pound test) due to the clear water. Attach a bell sinker to the second lead. For salmon, fish fresh spawn in a borax-treated gob or small bag. Menominee nip single salmon eggs on light line. The public marina next to the Shepler Ferry Dock in downtown Mackinaw City has two boat launches. For bait, tackle, and fishing and information, contact VallotÂ’s Trout Farm (same location and phone) and Coffman Hardware, 227 E. Central in Mackinaw City (231-436-5650).
