Great Lakes Stewardship
Funding Priorities
The goal of the GLFT's Great Lakes Stewardship
grant category is to increase awareness and understanding
of the ecology of the Great Lakes so that Michigan’s
residents become (1) active and effective stewards of the
Great Lakes and (2) advocates for strategies that support
the long-term sustainability of the Great Lakes fisheries.
This goal is being achieved primarily through
the Great
Lakes Stewardship Initiative, which the GLFT
has launched with the support of the Wege Foundation and with
the advice and counsel of an Advisory
Group and Funders’ Collaborative. The Initiative
involves an integrated model of place-based education, sustained
professional development for K–12 teachers, and K–12
school/community partnerships. This model is being deployed
across the state through regional “hubs,” which
are organizations that provide support and leadership for
the collaborative work of community-based organizations and
K–12 schools. Click
here for more information about the Great Lakes Stewardship
Initiative.
The GLFT may consider funding projects outside
of the Stewardship Initiative by:
- acting as a "general community contributor"
by granting education funds to, or as matching funds in
partnership with, an institution/organization that currently
is conducting education grant making and/or its own education
initiatives,
- funding education efforts within other granting themes
(currently access and ecosystem
health and sustainable fish populations), and
- funding urgent public information campaigns on targeted
issues on a case-by-case basis as special
projects.
Application Materials
Through the GLFT Stewardship Initiative, significant
and sustainable efforts will be funded in which community
organizations and K–12 schools in Michigan work together
to increase stewardship of the Great Lakes—particularly
among young people. If, after reading the Great
Lakes Stewardship Initiative Overview, you are interested
in pursuing grant funds, please contact Mary
Whitmore, GLFT Stewardship Coordinator, at mwhitmore@glft.org.
If you are interested in pursuing GLFT funds
outside of the Great Lakes Stewardship Initiative, please
contact Julie Bennett
