Access to the Great Lakes Fishery
Funding Priorities
The
goal of the GLFT’s fishing access funding category is
to significantly increase access to the Great Lakes fisheries
for shore-based angling and tribal fishing. Applications
will be accepted until 5:00 P.M. on September 9, 2008. Funding
decision will be made the following November.
Funding will be considered for fishing access
projects with guidelines that provide for:
- angler access enhancement to existing
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers breakwaters, or publicly owned
piers and bulkheads on the Great Lakes shoreline within
the state of Michigan (priority will be given to projects
on Lake Michigan)
- shore fishing access enhancement on Michigan
inland lakes and rivers at sites where it can be demonstrated
that such facilities are needed to increase opportunities
to fish for migrating Great Lakes species (priority will
be given to projects on Lake Michigan tributaries)
- boat launch facilities primarily to accommodate
tribal fishing at sites where it can be demonstrated that
other funds are not available to meet an existing need on
Lake Michigan or Lake Huron
- property acquisition for the above purposes if documented
fishing access plans for the site exist (requires different
application format, but application deadline is the
same)
The GLFT limits its funding for any recreational
access projects to facilities directly related to fishing
and the accommodation of anglers such as parking areas, restrooms,
shelters, walkways, railing, lighting, signage, etc. If such
facilities are to be shared with other expected users of the
site, the GLFT will consider funding a share of the project
costs based on estimated use by anglers versus non-anglers.
Improvements to accommodate small boat access at shore fishing
sites will be considered on a case-by case basis only if it
can be demonstrated that other funding sources have been exhausted.

*Do not use the above application materials
if your project involves the acquisition of property. Click
here for more information and the request for proposal
specific for land acquisition projects. While projects that
include property acquisition have different proposal requirements,
the application deadline as stated above is the same.
